Aquaponics is a beautiful relationship between plants and fish that is mutually beneficial.   This relationship takes the principles of Hydroponics, which is basically the growing of plants in water with out the use of soil, and Aquaculture, the method of fish farming, and combining these in a closed recirculating system to produce a sustainable food source.

A third relationship is formed when water from the fish tank is pumped in to the plant trough.  This third relationship is called Beneficial Bacteria.  Beneficial Bacteria convert the other wise toxic fish waste in to usable nutrients for the plants.  The plants then consume the nutrients and in turn clean the water that is re-circulated back to the fish as fresh water.

Oxygen levels and a balanced water PH are also important factors in a productive system.  These can be controlled and monitored with a home kit or taken to a local facility to be tested.

Some of the great benefits of Aquaponic farming is that the traditional farming equipment is not needed, a minimal space is required, one body of water is used, and ground pests are eliminated.  Because the Plants are grown floating in a trough of water,  or an elevated gravel bead, many common pest problems are eliminated all together.  Also, when harvesting, your plants are clean and crisp with no soil to be removed before packaging or selling.

Many Aquaponic Farmers have also discovered their produce grows anywhere from 25% to 70% faster, bigger, and juicier! The plants thrive in an Aquaponic system!

Because the system is continually circulating through the fish tank and the plants, herbicides and pesticides can not be used.  The fish are unable to tolerate the pest chemicals or other fertilizers that are normally applied to plants, and will die if used, resulting in a complete collapse your food production system.

The benefit of this is that your produce is 100% Organic!  You now have fresh fish and fresh vegetables growing in a continuous, sustainable system.  Aquaponics is the most sustainable food source in the world!
